Bitcoin has lost almost 20% in less than two weeks, proving that extreme volatility remains a hallmark of crypto investing. Yet in the world of Bitcoin, it’s largely business as usual with bullish conviction intact — in contrast to traditional markets where moves on this scale are met with alarm. The largest cryptocurrency slipped 0.5% to around $57,280 in early London trading on Friday, a sixth day of declines. “Bitcoin correction is not a big deal,” wrote Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda. While a break to $50,000 “would represent a large correction from the highs, it would still…
Peru is joining the global push to develop a central bank digital currency (CBDC), central bank President Julio Velarde said on Tuesday, as policymakers worldwide seek to keep pace with fast-spreading cryptocurrencies. Speaking at a conference with business leaders in Lima, Velarde said that Peru’s central bank is working with the central banks of India, Singapore and Hong Kong in developing a CBDC. “We are not going to be the first, because we don’t have the resources to be first and face those risks,” Velarde said, “But we don’t want to fall behind. At least we are at the same…
Marathon Digital Holdings Inc. plans to sell $500 million of convertible securities to buy additional Bitcoin and mining equipment to process cryptocurrency transactions. The private offering of the five-year notes would be to so-called qualified institutional investors, the Las Vegas-based firm said in a statement Monday. Investors will have the right to convert the notes to common stock in certain circumstances and during specified periods. Marathon isn’t the first to sell convertible bonds to buy more Bitcoin. Enterprise software maker MicroStrategy Inc. started acquiring debt to buy Bitcoin since mid-2020, including convertible bonds, linking its stock even closer to the…
In a moment of balance and strength, I felt my muscles stiffen, the pressure against my right triceps increasing. Flirting with gravity, I engaged my core like I had a hundred times before, raised my hips a little higher, and started angling my upper body towards my friend. I looked at him with a labored gaze before I remembered my many teachers’ endless insistence that I smile. With equal part astonishment and equal part disbelief, he muttered that he could never possibly do that: “That’s impossible. You are just so flexible!” The great mistake in that sentence is the word…
M.I.A. on Crypto, Assange and Her New Album
As a musician and video artist, M.I.A. has always made expressly political work. Throughout a bracing, eclectic catalogue she’s tackled colonialism, immigration crises and other forms of systemic oppression head-on. Even when the sounds are chaotic, or the message isn’t quite clear, there’s always a current of radical energy in the music. That was the spirit of her 2010 mixtape “Vicki Leekx” – a riff on the activist Julian Assange’s whistleblower project WikiLeaks. Released for free in the wake of her third studio album, “Maya,” the tape is now available to purchase for the first time, in non-fungible token (NFT)…

Since 2021 began, DOGE has soared 4507.85%. Why Is It Moving? DOGE did not show much movement coupled with the apex coin on Friday. The global cryptocurrency market cap rose marginally by 0.19% to $2.84 trillion at press time. The cooling off…
Indian-American hired woman to slap him every time he used Facebook. Elon Musk’s reaction
The story of an Indian-American hiring a woman to slap him every time he opened Facebook has caught the internet’s attention again, thanks to just two emojis from billionaire Elon Musk. Maneesh Sethi, founder of wearable devices brand Pavlok, hired a woman to slap him in the face every time he used Facebook. He hired the woman through US classified advertisements website Craigslist. He offered $8 an hour for the job that required the person to work sitting next to him at a café or his home and watch his screen. “When I am wasting time, you’ll have to yell…
In an interview with DealBook’s Andrew Sorkin, Griffin stated he was still skeptical of any “solid commercial use cases” for a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. “I think we’re going to see Bitcoin be replaced conceptually by the Ethereums, replaced conceptually by the next generation cryptocurrencies that will have the benefits of higher transaction speeds, lower cost per transaction,” said Griffin. Griffin said he wasn’t worried that he “missed the train” on Bitcoin because he believes that the train is, in some sense, “still in the station.” “I think we’re still trying to understand if we want to hit this world…
During a Reddit Talk session on Thursday, “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary said that his cryptocurrency exposure is near 10%. “I’ve grown the portfolio remarkably,” O’Leary, chairman of O’Shares ETFs, said. “At the beginning of the year, I was at 3% weighting. The target was to get 7% by year-end. However, because of the appreciation of so many of the assets I have now, we’re almost at 10% today.” His holdings include many digital coins, but also products in the space, such as companies building decentralized wallets, O’Leary said. “So, we’re going to end up at the end of the…
Solana Labs’ co-founder thinks the fight between Ethereum and so-called “Ethereum killers” is unnecessary, as the true aim for people working in crypto should be to onboard “every human” onto Web 3.0. While many pundits have labeled Solana as an “Ethereum killer” due to its lower fees and faster transaction times, Solana Labs co-founder Raj Gokal said the project has no desire to kill the cryptocurrency — and wouldn’t be able to if it did. Gokal made the comments in response to a Wednesday Twitter post from the co-founder of venture capital firm Placeholder, Chris Burniske, who wrote that “despite…
